Sorry not sorry but if there’s one drink I’d like to enjoy all year round it’s a chai spice. I know that the spices in a chai mixture remind us of the autumn or fall season but I love having it after my morning long run.

Just like how we enjoy pumpkin spice latte which we can only indulge during the Fall season I don’t mind having chai latte from time to time.

Make it caffeine-free by not adding a black tea or if you feel you need your caffeine fix then add it when making your drink or how about a half teaspoon to your coffee.

If you add the chai spice mix to your coffee the mixture compliments each other while the spices stand out it does not overpower the whole taste at all. It gives a really nice aromatic smell.

It was a cold afternoon in Nurnberg. I had a sip of my chai latte and it felt so good I brave the cold as I strolled through the old town.

With only 6 ingredients you can make the chai spice and add it to your milk to enjoy spiced tea or chai latte at the comfort of your own home. It is cheaper than buying a tall or venti size outside. Keep it in your flask and bring it outside, have a seat in the park, and relax.

Making my own chai spice mix reminded me of some of my trips a visit to a tea plantation in Cameron and as part of our tour, we watched the sunrise while enjoying our morning tea, while in Kyoto I made sure to get matcha and in the US I tried pumpkin spice and chai latte in every coffee shop I went to.

I guess I just have a thing to try my favorite drinks while in other places and it makes me happy life’s simple pleasures at its best. I also love making my own recipe for turmeric tea and pumpkin spice latte.

ORIGIN OF CHAI

Chai is an Indian or Hindi word that means tea and therefore in the English language, we cannot use it to order tea and tea together.

It is a milky tea in India made with milk, black tea, and spices with a sweetener which is also known as Masala Chai, where masala means spice and therefore it is a spiced tea.

INGREDIENTS OF MASALA CHAI

  • SPICES
  • MILK
  • BLACK TEA
  • SWEETENER

A chai latte or masala chai has four ingredients: black tea was introduced in India and added to the masala chai during the time of the British colonization, milk of choice, sweeteners such as sugar or maple syrup, and the mix spices which we will make.

You can also use water to replace half of the milk which is also a common preparation in India or just use pure milk. This tea can be served hot or cold with some ice.

Despite having sweetener the best thing about this chai is the strong smell and flavors of all the spices. But you can always adjust it according to your preference. I like mine having an extra spice of ginger.

WHAT SPICES ARE USED IN CHAI SPICE

There are different combinations in making this easy chai spice mix recipe. It depends on your preference what kind of combination, flavor you would like to try.

While other recipes add allspice which is a ready mix combination of the same ingredients below (cinnamon, nutmeg, and cloves).

I prefer using powdered ginger when making the spice mixture and just add fresh ginger when making the drink. This is to make the chai spice mixture last longer and to keep it dry.

Cinnamon – Has a strong distinct nice smell and is commonly used as a condiment and in baking. From research, it has anti-inflammatory and antioxidant components.

Ginger – it has a spicy flavor. According to Healthline, it has been used as a traditional and alternative medicine aside from it has antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties.

Nutmeg – has a nice strong smell although I didn’t find it sweet after taste. It is advised that nutmeg consumption, while beneficial, should not be taken in large amounts.

Cardamom – has a fragrant smell and it is good to use when cooking lentils. It can help lower blood pressure and act as a diuretic.

Cloves – I find it to have an aromatic smell while the taste alone is a bit bitter, it has antioxidant properties and may help protect against cancer.

Black Pepper – it has this warm and spicy flavor. A very versatile and most used spice that has anti-inflammatory properties.

Just mix the following spices in their ground form and keep them in a dry and clean glass container. Keep it in your cupboard and use it whenever you feel like having a chai drink or use in your baking and recipes.

Alternatively, you can use the whole form or pods of the spices by boiling the spices together with black tea leaves and milk and then using a strainer pour your drink in your mug. Add sugar or any sweetener you like.

I am a runner too and find that a Chai tea is the perfect pick me up after a long run. I often get cold following my cool down and the heat and spice of this chai mixture plus the caffeine, sugar, and protein in cream tea, make it pure heaven!
