Finally, I found time to share with you my favorite vegan masala chai drink recipe. If you’ve seen my recipe about How To Make Easy Chai Spice Mix now it’s time to use it and make a new comforting drink that you’ll surely love.

GO VEGAN WITH MASALA CHAI

While originally in India masala chai uses dairy milk here we will use non-dairy since I no longer drink dairy milk our recipe here is definitely vegan.

I’ve seen recipes using different types of milk and I only tried soy milk and oat milk. My favorite is unsweetened oat milk. But if you have other non-dairy milk you can also use that to make this vegan masala chai drink.

I will try to use other dairy-free milk next time and update this post for recommendations. Or let me know in the comments if you tried others and it works for you.

MASALA AND CHAI

Masala is a Hindu word that means a combination of spices and chai means tea which is from the Chinese word cha also means tea therefore it is a spiced tea. The introduction of tea, particularly black tea, didn’t start until the British colonization in India dating from 1858 to 1947.

BENEFITS OF MASALA CHAI DRINK

Want a healthy drink? Imagine a healthy drink full of antioxidants, anti-inflammatory, good for the heart, and other wonderful health benefits. In making chai spice mix I did mention the benefits of each spice and now that you have combined them all together you get to reap all its goodness and health benefits.

INGREDIENTS OF MASALA CHAI

Masala – a combination of spices (cinnamon, nutmeg, ginger, cloves, cardamom, and pepper)

Milk it is better to use unsweetened dairy-free milk of your choice or  start with oat milk

Sweetener –  I use both maple syrup and brown sugar for my spiced tea.

Black Tea – I use a black tea bag alternatively you can use loose leaves of black tea

SUBSTITUTIONS / OPTIONS

  • Add fresh grated ginger when you make your masala chai.
  • Add a half teaspoon to your coffee, the spices and coffee compliments each other and it smells perfect.
  • Make it caffeine free by not adding black tea or coffee or use decaffeinated coffee
  • After boiling use half of it and keep excess for your next drink.

I tried different ways in making my vegan masala chai. Since it is a milky tea from India, here are the methods I use.

For a quick morning fix: Add 1 cup of milk in the pot under medium heat, then add chai spice mix, maple syrup, and fresh ginger. For about 5-7 minutes with occasional steering until it is hot enough and starts boiling.

Reduce the heat and add 1 black tea bag letting it steep for another 2-3 minutes under low heat. Give a quick stir and turn off the stove.

Using a small strainer on top of your mug pour the masala chai slowly to separate the ginger. Do note that the chai spice mix will not completely dissolve in the pot.

Another option: is to boil the chai spice first in one to two cups of water, add loose black tea leaves (if using), and let it boil for 5-7 minutes. Use one teaspoon to one and a half teaspoon of your chai spice mix.

In another small pot heat, half cup of milk or you can also use the microwave as an option.

Once your chai spice starts boiling, turn off the heat. Transfer half to your mug ensuring no spice or loose leaves will fall then add the hot milk. Add the sweetener and stir.

If using a teabag, add and let it steep for 2-3 minutes.

You can keep the extra boiled masala in a clean container or tumbler and reheat it again the next day.

When adding to your coffee use half a teaspoon of chai spice mix and stir well.

Note: This recipe uses all powdered forms of spices as it is more convenient. You can also use whole forms and crush it using a mortar and pestle or as it is and boil in the water first.

Try both or choose whichever works for you.

I’m a huge fan of chai but have never made it before. I cannot wait to try this recipe. I love that it’s prepared with oat milk because that’s all I drink.

Love this post and it’s very timely too. We are heading into Chai season up here in Canada. I make some every afternoon for a midday treat. I will try it with non dairy next time. I bet almond or macadamia milk would be great too.

I really didn’t know the spices used for Chai and I have them all, plus lots of black tea. Making this ASAP.
